Across the EU there is a growing focus on the supply, attraction and retention of foreign workforce, opening up opportunities and advancing labour migration policies and initiatives. The presentation by Leila Hadj Abdou “Labour Migration Policies in Times of Labour Shortages: the Case of Austria” at this years IMISCOE Conference is guided by the assumption that despite this trend, countries exhibit different types and scope of policy change, depending on factors such as labour market systems in place, or past immigration policy trajectories.
Austria represents a particularly interesting case in that regard. The unmet demand for labour has been the highest in the EU after the Covid-19 pandemic. The presentation explores if, which, and to which extent changes of policies and (implementation) practices have occurred in Austria to address shortages. The presentation is based on the recently published study “Labour Migration in Times of Labour Shortages in Austria” of the National Contact Point Austria in the European Migration Network.
