Given the migration policy relevance of the Middle East, this year’s EMN Austria – EU Migration Talks focused on this region. Organized by EMN Austria in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior, the event addressed key migration-related issues and questions through impulse statements, and a panel discussion. We were delighted to welcome Sophie Nonnenmacher, Senior Liaison and Policy Advisor at the IOM Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, as our special guest and keynote speaker in Vienna.
The discussion focused on the complex causes and dynamics of displacement, migration and return in the Middle East. Among the questions discussed were:
- Which global power shifts are currently shaping the political and humanitarian situation in the Middle East?
- What role does the humanitarian and development engagement of Austria and the EU play in light of the political, human rights, and security situation?
- What opportunities exist for migration policy cooperation with states in the region – even in the context of political fragility?
- What significance does the diaspora have for democratization and stability in the Middle East?
The discussions offered experts from practice and research an opportunity for both exchange and joint reflection.
