On the occasion of the publication of the Austrian national report and the EMN Synthesis Report on migrants with a long-term irregular stay in the EU, EMN Austria presented the key findings of the European study and discussed them with experts. The discussion also examined Austria’s approach to ending irregular stay. In this context, Austria primarily relies on (voluntary) return, while the political prioritisation of regularization is not evident. To present a possible alternative, EMN Sweden introduced a Swedish regularization approach in greater detail. Building on these contributions and the key findings of the EMN Synthesis Report, participants subsequently discussed whether return and regularization are the only ways to bring an irregular stay to an end.
