VCML Symposium “Migration and Solidarity”

The Vienna Centre for Migration & Law (VCML) is hosting the symposium “Migration and Solidarity” at the University of Vienna on Thursday, May 21 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The symposium is organized in cooperation with the Institute for Legal Philosophy. It examines “solidarity” in the context of migration law from various perspectives. The event is prompted by the reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) and its new solidarity mechanism. The topic of “solidarity” will be discussed in depth with regard to European asylum law and beyond. The symposium will feature two panels. The first panel will focus on conceptual considerations regarding the topic of “solidarity.” The second panel will discuss practical and lived solidarity in the national context.

Speakers: Alexander Somek, Pauline Endres des Oliveira, Lisa Steurer, Judith Kohlenberger, Christian Schmaus, and Miriam Danter.
